A day on the bridge

My vision to spin records consisted of my wearing a custom made T-shirt, of showing a locally produced landmark stencil and involved my being inundated by hoardes of the world’s creatively repressed and suitably impressed. In short, I felt the work was going to be easy and profitable in a very short time, (somewhere along the lines of ‘immediately’) and, that I was going to change the World by liberating creativity from it’s prison of denial.

Bridge over the Seine

My work was going to be THAT easy? Ha! How reality is so different from imagining!

In preparation for my highly anticipated day’s work, I bought a large postcard of the Eiffel tower and spent around eight hours cutting a nicely detailed stencil for application to a finished record.

At last, five PM and wearing custom designed promotional T-shirt, I felt I was ready.

The crowds I drew were nothing short of spectacular. I received applause, cheering, and a single customer after over four hours… Whom proved to be my only one at that! People were shy, afraid, timid and some appeared to be bordering on violence in their efforts to get away from my offer to share the creative experience.

Paris crowd

Even the CHILDREN tried crawling under a rock; and their reaction surprised me most of all. Out of all of my audiences, only one loud American woman appeared to get the message that my purpose on the street was not aimed at self gratification and glory. To the rest, I was but a showman selling objects of no regard. Thus, in hindsight, I realize my message was lost in transmission; festival is NOT street presentation and as I folded down my kit, I remembered the street performers I had met and talked shop with. I definitely need a street guise.

Record paintings

Some years ago I was caught up in the flow of street traders, gansters and con-merchants and to me, it appears that world is still alive and strong. Ethics run high amongst these people, until or unless the lines are crossed! A great example of this lies in the experience of Maria. She felt convinced she was seeing the shell game clearly – and risked 40 Euro on it and lost immediately. A short time afterwards, the hustler – having seen she was with me working on the street – returned her money to her. Good on him. Lucky Maria! We also witness what appeared to be a turf battle between rival gangs of trinket sellers; individual sellers establish a pitch within their own distribution network, paying 10 Euros per day for the rights to stand on one spot. When another distribution network overlaps the first one.. well… you should have seen them run! Gangs of sellers running after others – all clutching armloads of jingling stock… well it was funny to say the least. Then the police arrive and the streets are miraculously cleared of all sellers, hustlers and card sharks… for several minutes more – until it starts again. There’s never a dull moment, I must say!

Thus, Sunday came and went and our free parking will expire at 9am. I will move on from Paris then, far richer from the experience and resolved to completely redesign my public street presentation – which is going to be interesting and perhaps a bit of a shame for, I never wanted to sensationalize the creative experience for anyone; with polite and informal invitation, I did always strive to humanize creative quality and shine a light onto it’s spontaneous universality. :/ The world is not so. People need someone to look up to, to aspire to or to follow. :/

Roll on, roll on.

By Eiffel’s tower

It’s been a long road since failing to inspire the kickstarter community to back this project;  I’ve lived through a loss of purpose that grew into a knowing determination to take this dream to task, lest I be an overturned turtle spinning between the lanes of a road to nowhere.

Moving right along… and I’m pouring over meagre resources, sidestepping the wallow of hopelessness, and refusing to entertain any thought but those of blessing. May the winds blow.

I’ve a (very) small trailer filled (half) with records, paint cans and stencils… my family set ourselves upon the road to discover what could be done on the streets, performing along our way to visit elderly relatives in Italy’s south.

Car and trailer

With both time and money having been in relatively short supply, only the most urgent tasks were taken to hand prior to departure; leaving many creative efforts to be undertaken en-route.

The first item on our creative agenda was to work out where we were going and on which direction we were going to travel. We already knew the end result was to be Puglia, south Italy, tho’ the largest question in mind was whether to go via Amsterdam and the Germanic countries, or go thru France and perhaps Rome.

After a good part of our first day on the outskirts of Calais – reading forums and attending to matters such as food and – believe it or not – preparing stencil for cutting – right in the public carpark of the local Auchan hypermarket. We eventually instructed the GPS navigator to avoid toll and motorway routes and set us upon a meander towards Paris.

Preparing stencils in the carpark at Calais

‘Plan was to arrive in Paris at sometime during mid morning and thus, our first stop in Precy, some 45 km northish of Paris, was ideally located for sleep before our timely arrival. Map (GPS), said there was a park nearby, which ended up being a train station carpark! Thank goodness for Saturday! We awoke to an empty car park and used the plywood lid of the trailer to produce the t-shirt designs I had prepared back in Calais; with name and website all over to avoidance the ‘some guy I saw’ reference. A passerby suggested we would be more comfortable at a local park by a river, and by grass, we were!

Stencil cutting in Precy by the river

With music blaring and stencils cutting, the kids played games on a rug. A few local boys passed by, and later introduced themselves with a bottle of whiskey and an invitation to jump off a bridge. YES!!!!

Before time came to go, the fellows asked me for a stencil print souvenir, so we did have some fun indeed!

In the middle of all that, I still did complete the planned Tshirt on that day – two of them, actually.

We finally, finally left for Paris and… would you believe it? We found free parking not two blocks from the Eiffel tower! For two nights we slept there! Tourism doesn’t come any better than that!

I can hardly wait for tomorrow! Bring it on!!!

Kickstarter…

Hi All.
After a busy two weeks of tearing my hair out, I produced a submission for Kickstarter that was accepted by the site to run for ten days.
Yes, ten days is a very short time to run a campaign, yet as the time is running short, I had to do so in allowing for the 14 day payment period of the project’s administration process.
I have sent around 90 emails, posted on my wall on Fb and witness double figure shares on the Facebook site, yet sadly – to date we are only at around single-figure percent of our way to achieving our goal. I am very grateful for the experienced and humbled by the support I have received yet at the same time, I also can taste the bitterness of disappointment of the unfulfilled dream. Never mind, I have many more beats of my heart and breaths in my lungs before my game is over.

Spin on… the world still does.

Beach blues…

I was once told by a professional car boot seller that hot and cold days are both disasterous for sales, and here the same holds true for beachside busking, it appears.

Today’s weather was perhaps the most agreeable I have ever known. The beach was so tightly packed I think there would have been better trade in shoehorns than in records.

Yet… I did get a suntan. 😀 😀

Btw, the kickstarter video was completed yesterday and compiled today. This old and cranky computer of mine handled the job admirably and in it’s own sweet time. @1004Mb, the upload is gonna take a very, very long time.

Life goes on. I trust yours is a great week!

Classic Plastic

It is hard to argue that a vinyl LP is definitely up there in being one of our culture’s most classic pieces of plastic.

‘Classic Plastic’ is also the name of a Britpop style band who are just completing their debut EP, ‘Classic Plastic’. The guys approached me about doing an album cover for them early last year, yet time being time and artists being artists, the recording and cover are only in their finalization stages right now.

I was picking through my recent images when I found the first concept for the cover. It is not approved by the rest of the band, so don’t go falling in love with it just yet. I’m just posting to show a little bit of scope in what I do, have done and can do!

Enjoy!

album idea 1

Not bad, eh?

I did play around with surface textures too, allowing the text to be the surface of the record, yet despite the concept being wonderful, the manifestation was a little disappointing.

Well, let’s see how the band likes it! To hear their music, see http://classicplastic.bandcamp.com/

A street pitch in Brighton

Last Sunday (30 June) the sun was out and the winds were light so we went to Brighton beach to hone our street performance skills and to (hopefully) gain some video footage of crowd reactions to the record spinning process for addition in to our urgent Kickstarter application; the bigger the better!

My team and I arrived at the rocky beach at around one, just by the pier. The previously sunny skies had been swallowed by a ground level cloud and an unpleasant chill was in the wind. Without unpacking fully, I keenly grabbed some paint from the top of my box, put my head down and spun a disc in anticipation of an audience reaction. My crowd formed instantly! Tho’ I can never tell how many people are watching whilst my head’s down, they were, at a guess, 3 and 4 deep, murmuring ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’, with candidly appreciative remarks to make the icing on the cake.

Among the first visiting artists of my day were a group of four, Izzy, Teddy, Holly and fourth whose name I don’t quite remember (phone a friend?) whom reminded me a little of myself in the shoes of a numerological #8 artist… life is not all about bread and butter!

Rounding off the day, I met Bobby, an electrician from Kent who was at first reluctant to have a spin, yet when he did… it was pure magic! His face changed completely and, when he returned to collect his completed work, he presented me with some Chinese takeaway, as a tip! Thank you Bobby! May you see Australia soon!

While packing up at around 5.30, the wind had grown even colder. The big win of the day was film footage. Next weekend looks like a touch of summer is arrived – stay tuned!

Booking cancelled…

Just thought I’d add a note here to mention that tomorrow’s birthday party I had been booked for by a local celebrity, has been postponed indefinitely. In the meantime, I have been pitching to a local cinema house to paint a piece for them – doing the research work and prodding forums for ideas only to be met with a cone of silence in the communications department – the cinema simply stopped replying to my emails. I did send a note to them yesterday asking for an update – after a week’s silence from their end, which was surprising in itself seeing as every other email I sent to them was answered in under fifteen minutes!

Sigh… life goes on. I have been clutching at straws to earn a quick buck to pay for the tour and neither one or the other appear to be in the process of coming into being. Uffah.

The big plan…

And now, dear Reader, I take you away from the officious reportage of my public life and down to the level of intent and motivation. I have been doing the record-spinning gig for the past two years – initially for a bit of a laugh, a bit of fun… and have seen an incredible impression being made upon the people with whom I work. Flashes of inspiration, moments or realization, expectations being blown away… whatever you want to call it – there appears to be some sort of communion with the divine, the creator within, that scarcely is unnoticed by anyone who sees it – participant and spectator alike. There is something amazing, magical, that transpires in the ten minutes or so that I am with someone. They open up a space within themselves and touch something.

I have a growing and devoted following here around town where I live and, following recent dates ( such as the Small World festival), I can see that others too are recognizing the rare genius contained within the work I do – and not a moment too early!

As put so well by an art therapist “What you do in ten minutes takes me three days to do. Oh, btw – I’m stealing your idea”. Oh well, mimicry is the best compliment.

Since October last year I have been working to take the Viz-Usual Spin on the road to share it with the European continent, meh, the whole world, to cut a stencil of each of the localities I visit, to paint limited edition pieces only at those locations and, to promote the creative inspiration I see as a light in the eyes of someone who ‘gets’ the work I am doing. Most importantly of all, I want to promote MY creativity, the work that I do! I’ll bring along a canvas or two, a portfolio and some business cards… here’s hoping my phone will keep ringing long after the tour is done! Winter work as an artist living in England is a blessing!

Let me tell you a little bit about what I’ve organized so far.

I have saved up on records, and now have about 6,000 or so, with more sources available. I have researched locations and laws and have found no real restrictions in those. I have looked on eBay for a suitable van – 3.5t will be necessary at the very least in order to carry people and supplies, and an ex-community bus or crew cab unit will be ideal, with tinted windows please, and then there’s insurance to throw in on top of that, plus fuel, breakdown kit (fuel filters/ fan belts/ spare light globes), plus food…PLan is, to sleep in the van

We will also need some paint supplies. I do have quite a pile of offbeat colours yet require a palette of basic, standard rainbow and girly and boyish colours; ROYGBIV, black, pinks, purples, a couple of fluro’s just for good measure.

From the time I am financed, I think it will take me 2 weeks to get everything ready and together – to pack the van in such a way that I can cut stencils on the run, modify it if necessary, and make any servicing and repairs and to book a ferry.

Wish me luck!

So what do I hope to achieve from all of this activity? A fun holiday? No. I hope to achieve notoriety for what I do, to sustain my family on it’s wave long enough to improve our life situation which, ultimately, would arrive at our finding a rural plot of land and living simply, networking with others to live a simple and low impact life without the confusions of money to dictate whether or not I live or die, eat or starve and all that.

**I have been making a video log of this entire process, from the when we were going thru the eviction and move out, to all the way along. I intend to make a video documentary with a little help from my good friends at Bat On Ball Studios.**

Kickstarter has been a great thing for me to help me to put my ideas together, in a straight line format which every day becomes clearer. Wish me luck!

A busy weekend

This weekend went really well for pre-tour experience! Saturday we were in the middle of a.huge street party where there were many stalls to match. The Kemptown carnival was a bustling booze up with live music and hardly a space to put one’s elbows!

image

We pitched in a side street which was nice at first only to find that we were out of the.main traffic flow and that the mouth of out street served a a perfect stage forth local samba band! Whistles and drums beat loudly making communication near impossible… So I went for a walk instead. I met the badge lady who inspired me to make some of my own using my spin painting as a design template – I made 8.
image

The day wasn’t brilliant by a long shot yet I did learn that many hands do not brisk trade make when so many other services are on offer, including and especially the dreadful alcohol! Human wreckage was strewn about the street like litter by 6pm and, as we were one of the last to pack up, found ourselves the focal – or should I say vocal – point of their mind-meander. :-/

Sunday came upon me by surprise, despite the fact that I knew for certain that it follows on from Saturday. On Saturday, we were told of an event being held at Stanmer Park. We had no idea what it would be so rolled up anyway. The guard at the gate phones ahead and directed us past an event dedicated to nature where arts and crafts were being exhibited.
image
There was a huge marquee housing photographers, jewelry makers, textile artists and character designers, to name but a few.
The day began very quietly in spite of reports pouring in of a hectic event down the road. I enjoyed the sun, chatted and showed off Rameses to a lazy flow of lunchgoers whom were lulled into sleepiness by the weather, the atmosphere, and the sweet melodies of live bands.

Today has taught me that I need to spend some time educating my attendees of my plans! Whilst it is nice to engage in competitive bicker over the worth of a pound, my knowingness of my own project’s needs does sour the bantering experience for me, somewhat. I suppose I’d best get on to telling you about that one!
